Therefore, we created a survey to better understand how families who have loved ones with DEEs have navigated decisions about whether to vaccinate their child with a DEE against COVID-19, document any side effects and better understand the severity of any COVID-19 infections for those with rare epilepsies.<\/p>\n\t<p>Our team is made up of amazing DEE researchers and clinicians including:<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Freedman DO: Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Dell Medical School and a board-certified pediatric neurologist in UT Health Austin Pediatric Neurosciences at Dell Children&#8217;s in Texas<\/p>\n<p>Tina Sosa MD, Msc: Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine and Associate Chief Quality Officer at Golisano Children&#8217;s Hospital in NY<\/p>\n<p>Anne Berg PhD:\u00a0Adjunct Professor of Neurology &#8211; Epilepsy\/Clinical Neurophysiology and COMBINEDBrain<\/p>\n<p>Richard M. Click on the poster to make it bigger!<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deepconnections.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/PXL_20221205_192516831-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"PXL_20221205_192516831\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"1440\" width=\"2560\" title=\"PXL_20221205_192516831\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deepconnections.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/final-DEE-P-COVID-2022-AES-Poster-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" itemprop=\"url\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deepconnections.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/COVID-Poster.jpg\" alt=\"COVID Poster\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"1665\" width=\"2225\" title=\"COVID Poster\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n<h2>\n\t\tMain Poster Insights\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>COVID-19 Illness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>51% of respondents reported mild COVID cases, 37% moderate, and 12% severe<\/li>\n<li>80% of DEE children were unvaccinated when infected<\/li>\n<li>Fever, cough, and congestion were the most common symptoms<\/li>\n<li>13% required hospitalization, the majority of which were in the ICU, 1 death was reported<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>COVID-19 Vaccine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>60% of respondents vaccinated or intended to vaccinate their DEE child<\/li>\n<li>71% had no side effects<\/li>\n<li>Reported side effects included fever, lethargy, soreness, and pain<\/li>\n<li>Increased seizures in 7 of 22 respondents<\/li>\n<li>Most side effects lasted 24-48 hours<\/li>\n<li>The majority of respondents got information about the vaccine from their healthcare provider.
