Study Overview
This study examined what factors most strongly influence quality of life for 242 individuals (ages 2-50 years) with developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) and other severe neurodevelopmental conditions. Caregivers completed detailed questionnaires about their loved one’s health, abilities, and daily activities. Using advanced statistical analysis, researchers identified which factors had the greatest impact on quality of life.
Key Findings
Cognition and engagement emerged as the most important factors:
- Individuals with slightly higher cognition scores (even small gains at very early developmental levels) showed meaningfully better quality of life
- Those who could actively participate when using touchscreens had the highest quality of life scores
- The ability to be alert and engage with people and objects appeared particularly valuable
Other important factors varied by life domain:
- Physical health: Fewer anti-seizure medications correlated with better scores
- Social interaction: Communication skills and ability to see and attend to faces/objects were key
- Independence: Participation in daily activities like dressing made a significant difference

These findings suggest that even small functional improvements – in alertness, hand function, or cognitive skills – may meaningfully enhance quality of life for individuals with severe neurodevelopmental conditions.
